A Silver Lining for Square Roots

First major international design award!

Everyone at Square Roots is deservedly proud to have taken home their first major international design award. After three years of collaborations with designer Jose Ballesteros, the partnership has borne fruit with the Limonio dining chair.

This beautiful design has just bagged a silver award at the gold standard A’ Design and Award Competition.

The goal at Square Roots has always been to create something that is unique, that can inhabit its own design space, and that introduces some new ideas. These values shine through in their collaboration with like-minded designer Ballesteros.

“This piece is inspired by the great designs and shapes from the last century, exploring new minimal frames in which distinctive details can be integrated without being strident. Using know-how and craft-oriented makers from a postindustrial approach, the piece is unique”, explains Ballesteros. ”I call it Limonio as it is fresh and soft, but, much like the drink, still retains its acidic character. Its clean lines, the contrast between a fine, simplified biomorphic shaped back and the thin, yet strong legs creates an elegant asymmetrical balance.”

Over the past dozen years, Square Roots has developed a strong global portfolio of retailers across the globe. From Anthropologie to HD Buttercup, Weylandts, Norhor and its own branded stores in Korea, the common thread is a passion for design with originality and soul.

Square Roots co-founder Justin Wheatcroft has high hopes for the Limonio: “Our in-house R&D team and Jose have produced a very exciting piece in the Limonio. A chair with grace, confidence, and humour.” The woodsman notes that the company has a proven track record in developing, producing, and distributing the successful and much-copied Soli chair.

The Limonio dining chair sits happily in surroundings of different design languages. Light in weight and appearance to juxtapose with the dominantly weighty tables for which Square Roots is well known, the chair conveys the personality and humour of the brand and plays to the founders’ love for mixed production practices of technology and craftsmanship.

You can expect the Limonio to feature in many of the eclectic and eccentric stores worldwide from around September of this year.
